Coming October 1: Signet's New Cub Account!

Welcome to the The Berenstain Bears® Financial Literacy Program

If you're like most of us, you probably remember dropping coins into a piggy bank and shaking it just to hear the sound. Maybe you counted the money over and over, dreaming about the toy you wanted to buy. Maybe your parents or grandparents helped you roll coins or took you to the bank to make your very first deposit. You probably didn't realize it then, but those little moments were teaching you something much bigger than dollars and cents. Now imagine getting to create those same memories with your own child.

That's exactly why Signet Federal Credit Union® is so excited to partner with The Berenstain Bears® Financial Literacy Program.

For generations, The Berenstain Bears® have helped families talk about life's important lessons in a way kids actually understand. They've tackled everything from telling the truth to cleaning your room—and now they're helping children learn one of the most valuable life skills they'll ever have: how to manage money.

Earn 5.00% APY on the first $1,000 deposited*

The best part? It doesn't feel like a lesson.

It feels like reading a story together before bed. It feels like counting birthday money at the kitchen table. It feels like deciding whether to save a few more weeks for something special or buy the toy sitting on the store shelf today. Those are the moments where financial confidence begins. That's the heart behind our new Cub Account.

Designed for children ages under 12, the Cub Account gives families an easy way to start talking about money in a positive, encouraging way. Along the way, children will discover four simple ideas they can carry with them for the rest of their lives:

Save for tomorrow while watching your money grow.
Share with others because generosity matters.
Spend with a plan instead of buying on impulse.
Earn by learning that hard work has value.

Parents

Money Doesn't Grow on Trees

How many of us have heard that expression? Papa even tells Brother and Sister Bear that old figure of speech “You must think money grows on trees!” in The Trouble With Money. You probably remember thinking that your parents could get all the money you needed by visiting the credit union or an ATM when you were a child. It seemed like money just magically appeared.

Here are some tips to help your children Save, Share, Spend, Earn and learn how money is really earned and managed.

Save

  1. Open a Cub Account: Give your child a head start by opening a Cub Account at Signet. With a higher dividend rate, their savings can grow alongside them.
  2. Set Savings Goals: Encourage your child to set specific savings goals, whether it's for a new toy, a book, or even long-term goals like college. Help them track their progress.
  3. Teach the Power of Saving: Show your child how money in a Signet Cub Account earns dividends over time, helping their savings grow. Compare it to keeping money in a piggy bank or at home, where it doesn't grow on its own.
  4. Make Saving a Habit: Encourage your child to regularly deposit part of their allowance, birthday money, or chore earnings into their Signet Cub Account. Small deposits can add up over time.

Share

  1. Teach Generosity: Discuss the importance of sharing and giving back. Help your child choose a cause or charity they care about.
  2. Create a Giving Goal: Teach your child the joy of giving by setting aside a portion of their savings for a cause they care about. It's a simple way to build generosity alongside smart money habits.
  3. Volunteer Together: Participate in community service activities with your child. Signet supports local initiatives and can provide information on volunteer opportunities.
  4. Match Their Contributions: Encourage sharing by matching their contributions to charity, teaching them that their efforts can have an even greater impact.

Spend

  1. Create a Budget: Teach your child how to create a simple budget. Show them how to balance their wants and needs and make informed spending decisions.
  2. Discuss Smart Spending: Before making a purchase, discuss whether it's a need or a want. Encourage them to compare prices and look for deals.
  3. Set Limits: Give them a set amount of money for discretionary spending each month. This teaches them to make choices and understand the concept of limited resources.
  4. Teach Value Over Price: Explain that the cheapest item isn't always the best value. Help your child compare quality, durability, and cost before making a purchase.

Earn

  1. Chores and Allowance: Implement a system where your child can earn money by doing chores. This teaches the value of work and earning.
  2. Encourage Entrepreneurship: Support your child in small entrepreneurial endeavors like a lemonade stand, dog walking, or crafting and selling handmade items.
  3. Through Signet's free Banzai financial education program, kids and teens can explore interactive lessons on earning an income, starting a business, entrepreneurship, setting financial goals, and making smart money decisions. With engaging activities and real-life scenarios, Banzai helps young learners discover how their skills, creativity, and hard work can turn into future opportunities.
  4. Track Earnings: Help your child keep a record of their earnings. This can be a simple notebook or an app. Tracking their income helps them understand the relationship between work and earning money.
