A Suitcase. A Few Railroad Workers. One Big Idea.

In 1939, a group of local railroad workers in Paducah watched one of their own experience an unimaginable loss—the death of a child. His coworkers saw a family in need and did what neighbors and coworkers have always done in Western Kentucky: they came together.

They pooled what they had to help. And from that simple act of compassion came a bigger idea: what if they continued putting their resources together so they could be there for one another when life brought the unexpected?

Quarters were collected. A suitcase became their vault. And in the basement of the Illinois Central Railroad freight house, what would eventually become Signet Federal Credit Union® began. Signet's documented history traces its founding to June 1939, when it was established to serve railroad employees, pensioners and their families.

There was no corporate backing. No outside shareholders. Just working people using what they had to help the person beside them.

More than 85 years later, that idea still defines us.

We’ve grown from a single volunteer and a suitcase of coins into a credit union serving 11 counties across Western Kentucky, but our purpose has never been about how much we’ve grown. It’s about why we started in the first place.

To help one another. To show up when it matters. To believe that when people pool their resources, their knowledge and their strength, they can make life a little better for the people around them.

That was true in 1939. It’s true today.
