What to Expect When Opening Your First Account

Start with ease.
Because opening an account shouldn’t feel overwhelming.

Whether you’re opening your very first account or switching from another financial institution, knowing what to expect can make the process feel simple and stress-free. At Signet Federal Credit Union, our goal is to make getting started clear, welcoming, and straightforward.

Here’s what you can expect when opening a new account.

Step One: A Simple Conversation

Opening an account starts with a conversation. A team member will help you:

  • Understand your account options

  • Answer questions you may have

  • Walk through the process step by step

There’s no pressure—just guidance.

What You’ll Need to Get Started

To open an account, you’ll typically need:

  • A valid, government-issued photo ID

  • Basic personal information

  • A small opening deposit

Our team will let you know exactly what’s needed and help if you’re unsure.

Choosing the Right Account

Not every account looks the same. When opening your first account, you’ll talk through:

  • How you plan to use the account

  • Everyday banking needs

  • Digital banking access options

The goal is to match you with an account that fits your life—not the other way around.

Setting Up Digital Access

Once your account is open, you can set up:

  • Online banking

  • Mobile banking

  • Debit card access

We’ll help make sure you know how to log in, where to find key features, and who to contact if questions come up later.

What Happens After Your Account Is Open

After opening your account, you can expect:

  • Clear next steps on using your account

  • Ongoing support from a local team

  • Access to resources if your needs grow over time

Opening an account is just the beginning of the relationship.

We’re Here to Help

If you’re new to credit unions or banking in general, questions are always welcome. Our team is happy to explain things clearly and help you feel confident moving forward.

At Signet Federal Credit Union, we believe banking should feel approachable—especially at the start.

Opening Your First Account: Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be a member to open an account?

Opening an account is how you become a member at Signet. A team member can explain eligibility and next steps.

How long does it take to open an account?

In most cases, opening an account can be completed in one visit, depending on the account type.

Is there a minimum deposit required?

Some accounts require a small opening deposit. Our team will explain any requirements before getting started.

Can I open an account if I’ve never had one before?

Yes. We’re happy to help first-time account holders and explain everything along the way.

Will I get a debit card right away?

Debit card timing may vary. A team member will explain what to expect and how to access your account in the meantime. However, we do have the capabilities to print contactless debit cards in each branch.

Can I set up online and mobile banking right away?

Yes. Digital banking access can be set up when your account is opened if you qualify. Please ask a teller for more information.

What if I’m switching from another bank or credit union?

We can help answer questions and guide you through the transition.

Who can I contact if I have questions later?

You can contact your local Signet branch or reach out through digital banking anytime. We’re always here to help.
